We Are Independent Iron

At Independent Iron, we’re all about the Spirit of Freedom. We’re here to provide you with the tools you want and need so that you can get out there on the road where you belong and love to be (looking good, of course). That might mean dropping some knowledge or suggesting tips/tricks/hacks to make your riding experience the best it can be. Or we might suggest gear, apparel or accessories that we think will make you (and your bike) look even better and express your Independence. But take it or leave it. No pressure. No gimmicks. Just one rider looking out for another.


Why Blog?

There are so many unique, inspirational, funny, thought-provoking, communal aspects to the Harley lifestyle and, quite simply, we want to keep you informed and up to date on as much of it as we can. We’ll keep it simple, combing through the nonsense so that what we post is the best of what’s around.

There are a gazillion other blogs out there hoping to grab your attention (and business). So why bother reading ours? For starters, everything about Ink & Iron will be dedicated to Harley riders. You won’t have to sift through sport bike posts to get to the good stuff. When you come here, you know it’s all about your Harley.

We’ll also keep you informed of all the latest American V-Twin news, trends, products, etc. We’ll do our very best to keep things more interesting than your Owner’s Manual.

Harley-Davidson Hits Reset on the Softail Line

Dyna Gets the Boot & V-Rod is Quietly Laid To Rest

The company has rolled out 8 completely reinvented Softail models for 2018. Technically they have discontinued the Dyna line, however, a few of the bestselling Dyna bikes have been reborn as Softails. Diehard fans and purists of the Dyna line may be upset about this change, but we have to say these newly revised models sound (and look) pretty good from what we can tell. For 2018, the following bikes will be part of the Softail line:

Fat Bob
Low Rider
Heritage Softail Classic
Fat Boy
Street Bob
Softail Slim

The eight new softail models will be overhauled with increased performance, improved handling, decreased weight, and some aggressive new styling that changes the vibe of the big twin cruisers, while still maintaining that classic Harley feel. The old dual-shock frame has been replaced with a new monoshock frame. The new motorcycles will have new fuel tanks, and a new chassis that is stronger, lighter, and more stiff than 2017 models. The Dual-Bending Valve front suspension (first introduced on the 2017 Touring models) performs better and is more adjustable. It’s also being reported that they will weigh up to 35 pounds less than previous models.

“The new Softails are the result of the most extensive research and development program in the company’s history,” said Paul James, manager of Harley’s Product Portfolio. “Thousands of hours of research and testing were put into the complete ground-up design of these new cruisers. We focused on taking the total rider experience to a higher level, where authenticity, heritage and soul meet the modern edge of technology for a ride that must be felt to believe.”

All models come equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-Twin. The Fat Boy, Heritage Softail Classic, Breakout, and Fat Bob – have the option to upgrade to the larger Milwaukee-Eight 114. LED Headlights, keyless ignition and USB ports will be standard on all models. Cruise control is standard on the Heritage Softail Classic, and will be optional on all other models. ABS is standard on the Fat Boy, Heritage Softail Classic, Deluxe, and Breakout, and will be an option on all other models.

“The authenticity of Harley-Davidson design comes by sweating the details from start to finish – it’s hard to do and hard to copy,” said Brad Richards, the president of Styling and Design. “Harley-Davidson motorcycles are not a commodity; they are handed down from generation to generation. We look at every nut and bolt on the bike, all the finishes, and every small detail. The new Softail frame is like a piece of art and the more you take off the bike, the more beautiful it becomes. Its design speaks to the teamwork that our styling and engineering processes demand.”






Sturgis 2015 – On The Road with Independent Iron


The 75th Anniversary of Sturgis was a big one. So, we hit the road and traveled to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Which, by the way, is probably one of the most beautiful states in the country. Easily some of the best riding can be had out there.

From the Badlands to Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore to Deadwood and of course down to Main Street Sturgis, there is just so much to see. Check out this document of our adventure in Sturgis, South Dakota.
